A final year MBBS student knows for sure what to read and where to read that for his clinicals in General Surgery. There are about a dozen long cases and two dozen short cases and spotters and one can easily prepare for those with Bailey and Love, Clinical Das and Surgical Short Cases by Das. And there are other books for reference as well.
But a big dilemma will occur while reading for the theory part. There are about 70 - 80 topics from which one can get a long (essay) question or Short Notes in a theory Paper. Most of the questions will be from topics that are given too little in Bailey and too much in Schwartz / Sabiston.
Though Short Cases by Das is a book suited for Clinicals, Short Cases, Few Long Cases, Spotters, and Theory part for the topics given, not everything of importance is covered in that book. Topics which are not covered in that book become a nightmare for the hapless students (including two of our review team who used to study for the theory part of the exam only after the study Holidays !!) when one has to prepare notes for those questions before the exams
Obviously the student has so little time and one has to prepare for clinics as well as theory part in not only Surgery, but also in Orthopaedics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Medicine and Paediatrics. Surgery at a Glance written by Vishal Jain and Ashish Jain and published by Peepee Publishers and Distributors comes in handy in such situations
The book deals with those questions commonly asked form the topics starting from General Surgery, Head and Neck Diseases and Conditions. Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal Gland are dealt adequately. Few topics of Breast and Pancreas are also given. Gastrointestinal tract is dealt in detail.
A special attention has been accorded to the Vascular Conditions like Embolic disorders, Berger's Diseases, Mesenteric Vascular Occlusion, Aneurysmal Diseases and Deep Vein Thrombosis and also to the Paediatric Conditions like Cystic Hygroma, Tracheo Esophageal Fistula, Malrotations, Atresias, Hirshsprung's Disease. Hernias and Appendicits get their share.
This book is also suited for the Post graduates in few states (like Tamil nadu) where they have to write a paper after their first year.
The greatest beneficiaries of this title (in addition to the Final MBBS Students and PGs in Surgery ) will the Postgraduates of other Surgical Specialities (like Orthopaedics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology etc) who have to write a Theory Paper in General Surgery in their Final Year Degree Examination, who were so long dependent of Surgical Short Cases by Das, (for the topics covered there) though not all questions could be answered from that book alone.
To put it in a nutshell, More than nine out of the ten questions asked in any Theory paper in General Surgery can be answered with Ease, if one reads This book by Vishal Jain and Ashish Jain in addition to Surgical Short Cases by Das
Highlights
Lung Anomalies, Malformations in Splenic Development and Cosmetic Surgery which are not so commonly found in Undergraduate Texts, but are very common in the question paper , are dealt in a nice manner
If you have to write a Theory Paper in General Surgery.. THIS BOOK IS A MUST !!!

Paediatrics is an unique subject as far as PG Preparation is concerned. You will never know whether you need to read Paediatrics, how much of Paediatrics to read and how much you can manage with Medicine, Pathology and Microbiology
The Dilemma does not end after you have decided to prepare with “Paediatrics Proper” Another question arises out of blue then. What to read and where to read. Once you have decided that and start preparing , you will come to know that Paediatrics deserves a special attention compared to other subjects due the fact that the subject will appear perfectly clear and you will have a “déja vu” when you are reading. In the examination hall the situation becomes “jamais vu” when the question is focused (and we are off target)
This justifies that to be able to face questions from Paediatrics confidently in the exams, you need to revise and perhaps re-revise the subject a number of times. Books that help in review like Question and Answer books and Pre test series are definitely needed for this subject if not for others. Though no single book can be claimed to be complete for Paediatrics, there are a lot of books which will tell us what we know and more importantly what we don’t know. “Review in Paediatrics ” by A.Edwin Dias and published by Peepee publishers is one of the books that can be used to brush up your knowledge
Though this title deals with few topics only, the style is refreshingly lucid and up to the point. In spite of this not being a "complete" volume there are a lot of points which are emphasized in this book and that come regularly in various exams set by the faculty at AIIMS and State PGs. Most of the MCQs given here have been already asked in various exams more than once.
The facts are minimal, probably since the author had targeted his book mainly for the Foreign exams like PLAB and USMLE. We are impressed with the authors effort to make a concept clear to the student and then provide few points regarding that, though the facts are minimal. For example the Chapter on Genetics has questions only from Down's Syndrome A few more high yield points, say, from Turner's, Klinefelter's, Cri-du-chat etc could have made the book much lucrative.
The importance of Numerical Values that are often asked, especially in State PG Entrance Exams are stressed.
Highlights
Considering that the cover price of this book is less than Rs 100, this makes a good choice for reading. After going through this book once you will know how much you know (and how much you don't know) not only in Paediatrics, but also in the basic sciences

Review
There can be two approaches to the clinical electrocardiography. One like an “empirist”, is to memorise the normal and different abnormal positions and compare the ECG of a given patient with the patterns already memorised - the so called “Bird Watching” Technique (by AC Burton). The other more scientific way is to attempt to interpret the ECG from the fundamental knowledge of Cardiac Electrophysiology.
In the western medical setup, Electrocardiography, (ECG or EKG) is a specialist’s investigation. Those concerned with it are either specialists or technicians. All that another medical man is expected to know is to recognise that the ST Segment is not at its place, but has gone up or down and then he duly forwards the onus of the patient care to a specialist.
Needless to say the western books that deal with ECG fall in either of two categories. One group suits the technicians, who know very little electrophysiology (and care little about it) and thus books that give a little fundamental knowledge are enough for them. (for “birdwatching”!!) The other genre is for the Cardiologist and these books deal with so many facts. An Indian undergraduate student or Intern who takes this book to know something about ECG is easily put off when he finds that he has read the book for one week and is yet dealing with the equations telling why augmented leads are one and half times that of Standard leads and the importance of the tracer fitting too tight or too loose on the Paper.
There are of course exception, with few books (one by Goldberger for example), which are suited for the Undergraduate Student and Intern and Clinicians. But the glitch is that those books, though very cheap when bought with pounds and dollars, become costly affairs for us who have to buy them with the Indian Rupee.
Indian books, on the other hand are either too costly (some even more costly than western books) or come in awfully printed state, where in the diagrams and images you often see only the Squares and one has to be Sherlock Holmes to be able to find a tracing there.
Practical Electrocardiography by Dr.S.N.Chugh publised by Peepee Publishers offers a cheap yet beautifully printed book ideal for an aspirant of PG Entrance Exams. Not only it gives the basics of the ECG, but it also deals with the finer aspects of this wonderful investigation. The cover price of Rs 175 (Rs 140 when you get it from the publisher) means you can get this book at a reasonable price after discount and at this price, with this reasonably good printing quality and lucid presentation, this book is a good one to be on your reading table
Highlights
Though printed and presented well in spite of being comfortably priced, this book does not ignore facts. In addition to the routine points that are given in book so similar size and kind, the author steps further to tell us academic and anecdotal facets of this interesting subject of ECG for example Katz-watchel phenomenon is a state of biventricular hypertrophy where the transition zone remains at Normal Position.

This text book which deals with the various radiological procedures is something which most of us had needed at one time or another in our wards, but had to resort to bulky volumes and search in the departmental library as to the indication and contraindication of a particular procedure for the condition under investigation. More over we are used to questions like “Can I Eat”, “Can I travel” etc from patients after few procedures that leaves us in an awkward state. Awkward because none of the standard texts tell anything about the after care. But this book scores over most other books in this area.
Even though there are lot of books that mention the indications and contraindication, and there are few more which tell us about the patient preparation, this is probably one book at the rate of Just Rs 295, that gives us in detail the patient preparation and After care for all Radiological investigations that one can come across in a Clinical Setup
All the persons who went through the text were impressed as to the clarity with which the facts are presented.
The paper quality and the printing are of such standards that unless one sees the publishers name, one can be pardoned for assuming that he is reading a book printed in UK / US,
The book is divided into 27 chapters
The initial chapters deal with introduction to radiology and justifies that the “classical” contrast methods do have a place even after the advent of computerised imaging methods and the choice of the investigation should be decided for each individual condition and should be patient specific
Radiation Protection is covered eloquently and the ways to reduce the radiation as well as the individual responsibilities of the personnel associated like the referring clinician, radiologist, technician, the paramedical staff and the patient are chartered out. The chapter on Contrast media answers all the MCQs asked from this topic in various Post Graduate Entrance Exams
Then the investigations pertaining the individual systems are outlined. Investigation of all the systems are given. All the investigations are covered in detail, Investigation of Joints and Breast (Mammography and others) are given better than most other books
All the reviewers were overwhelmed by the chapter on Paediatric Radiology. It is a must read for every paediatrician and Other clinicians who order investigations for kids
We read the actual procedure of the Thallium Technetium scan which is so often asked in most exams in this book for the first time and also investigation of Lacrimal System and Sinography and Fistulography make interesting reading
The book also deals with Ultrasonogram (USG), Computed Tomography (ST Scan) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Nuclear Medicine
Interventional Radiology and Radiology in Emergency are the other topics that find their due here
Highlights
This book is a must for any postgraduate. Tricks and Tips which may be gained after years of exposure in that particular field (after mistakes and errors in judgements) can be gleaned in few days when one reads this.
For example, it is better to take PA view of skull instead of AP View in case of children. Reason..... In PA View less amount of Radiation reaches the lens of the eyeball which is anterior and so the lens is protected

Orthopaedics, for a long time was a “neglected” subject as far as authors and publishers were concerned. There were very few textbooks for an undergraduate student even a decade ago. The books gave too little or too much with the result that the students were forced to depend upon the notes. But, fortunately the situation has changed in the last decade with new excellent books by Indian Authors like Natarajan, Maheswari and Ebnezer.
Kalava’s textbook of Orthopaedics, published by PARAS PUBLISHING is a vibrant book that hangs on to the delicate balance of giving enough points to make the student answer a five mark question , as well as giving the nuances to score in a Multiple Choice Question. And what is more note worthy is that the book deals with the fundamentals of the subject so well.
This book is probably the best book in Indian market for MBBS Students and Postgraduates in Orthopaedics who have to write a theory paper in Orthopaedics. Most of the topics are given in a crisp and succinct way. The topics are supplemented with the various clinical signs and surgeries associated with the condition.
Emphasis is laid on the pathogenesis in case of Cold Ortho and biomechanics in case of Traumatology. Principles of therapy is elaborated with the procedures making this an ideal text for General Practitioners or those from allied branches like physiotherapy or Nursing.
A common problem faced by Students in Theory Examination is the alternate name confusions. Many a times we have seen and heard students not attempting or wrongly attempting a question in the exam because the questions paper had the alternate name (eponym or such things) and the student is trapped inspite of knowing the particular condition. I have personally known my friends write pages about TB Spine during my Undergraduate days when the Question paper had Pott’s Fracture. Needless to say only those who wrote about Ankle Injuries would have scored. This book alleviates this problem as all commonly (and rarely !!) used names for a specific condition are given For Example

Forensic Medicine comprises about 8 to 10 % of the questions asked in any PG Medical Entrance Exams and if there are 10 questions in a paper, 8 will be the questions that have been already asked and are from the topics that are favoured by the question setters.

Review of Radiology 1st Edition written by Sumer K Sethi and published by Peepee Publishers created ripples in the domain of the PG Preparation world (consisting of “Entranceemployees” – a term coined by Zulfi and Raj - or “PseudoPGs”).
The book stood apart for the concise size, the very low price (thanks to the publisher), Extensive Coverage of the subject in such a small book and the fact that most if not all the Questions can be attended from this book. Another aspect that made this book class apart from the other books was the fact that this was the concept based instead of the facts based approach of other similar books
But something that also struck the student immediately was the fact that the style of writing, grammar and language had to be improved and the book was either written in some other language and then translated verbatim or the typesetting unit got the notes the author had jotted down and had duly formatted that.
But the author and the publisher seems to have worked consciously and specifically on this aspect to weed off almost all the negative aspects of the first edition, while still maintaining and improving the positive aspects of the first edition, the result of which, you see an excellent work of knowledge, innovation and hard work on your reading table.
The improved typesetting makes it a pleasing reading. And the author has strived to explain the facts in this second edition. For example in the first edition in the section dealing with Fluoroscopy we had a line “Conventional – Ag – activated ZnCdS”. Now it is given in a much more legible form of “Conventional Fluoroscopy – material used in Ag activated ZnCdS (silver activated Zinc Cadmium Sulfide)”
Notable additions include
The protocol to be followed for a case of normal ventilation with defect in perfusion will find its utility when a question on clinical scenario is asked
The picture showing the site of origin of various bone tumours
Couinaud’s nomenclature of hepatic segmentations

Magic Angle effect – signal artifact seen within tendons oriented at 55 degree to the magnetic field. This is seen on T1 weighted image and not T2 weighted image
15 more review questions have been added (to the 400 questions in the first edition) making it 415 in all
Much Impressive is the Radiological Quiz Given on the end having some 30 images (printed in art paper, thus improving the quality of the images considerably). What is more noteworthy is the fact that the answers for this quiz are not given in a single word at the end. Instead the author has explained (briefly) each answer and more notably given the page number of the book where the corresponding topic is discussed
However, few (small, yet significant) points from the first edition are not striking the reader in this edition (compared to the earlier edition.) Examples include
Henri Becqueral discovered Radioactivity (this was discussed along with Roentgen’s discovery of X Rays in the first edition)
Functional Imaging with MRI using the various contrasts (this was discussed along with MRI in the first edition)
Best investigation for breast implant evaluation is MRI. This was discussed along with Mammography in the first edition, where as this is now given along with other breast conditions. It would do no harm when such a significant fact is stressed in more than one places when relevant)

Radiology accounts for about 2 to 3 percent questions in any Post Graduate Medical Entrance Exams. This amount to 6 to 9 questions in All India Exam and 4 to 6 questions in AIIMS and so on
The uniqueness of these Questions is that they are often straightforward and consume very little time as the question is hardly a lengthy one and the choices are usually crisp
The students for long were having no book for these questions. We were able to read Psychiatry from Ahuja, Anesthesia from Pharmacology books and Dermatology from Harrison / Davidson, but Radiology had always eluded us during the preparation period until the advent of Books like SARP, PARAS and Sure Sucess in PG by Ram gopal. Though these books touched the hitherto unexplored areas of the medical knowledge, the very fact that those book catered to all the four subjects made them in adequate for Radiology.
Gone are the days when you were asked about the Water Lily Sign or Flower vase appearence. Now a days questions are more specific and are more often than not from the Radiology text books as well. When a Doctor is not able to allocate even a week for Radiology in his Time table for preparation, he obviously cannot read the "Big Books" like Sutton etc.
“Review of Radiology” by Sumer K Sethi and published by Peepee brothers is a book that could well fill in the lacuna that exists in this area. The book written by a Senior Resident in Radiology in LHMC, who was once the topper in AIPG 2000, AIIMS 2000 and PGI 2000 and earlier was in the top 5 in CBSE PMT and DPMT Exams offers interesting reading
The success of the author lies in the fact that he has been able to give SO MUCH OF THE "NEEDED" POINTS in so few pages. This is possible because the author had once been a candidate in the Entrance Exam race itself
Most of the points that are given in the book have been already asked and more importantly almost all questions that have been previously asked can be solved with this little book. To check this the team decided to check this book with 2 question papers, All India PG 2004 (AIPG 2004 conducted on 11th January 2004) representing AIIMS Pattern and the memory recollected Tamil Nadu PG 2004 (TNPG 2004 / TN PG 2004 / Tamil Nadu PG 2004 conducted on February 29th 2004) Question Paper representing the State Model of Questions

The next litmus test was to know whether one can answer the “mirage questions”. Mirage Questions are those few questions asked in a PG Entrance Exam that are not found in the usual text books and the aspirants will be searching one book after another after the Exam is over and the answer will elude them. One reviewer wanted to know about H shaped Vertebrae. We could see that it is seen in Sickle cell Anemia Another reviewer wanted to know whether the answer for Bracket Calcification can be found in the book. He had once faced the question in JIPMER 2002 and could not find the answer in "ordinary" books and when he saw Lipoma of Corpus Callosum in this book, he was much impressed. Rummaging around the pages we found that Golden S Sign seen in Right Upper Lobe Collapse (the recent exams ask the specific lobe)
Well Done Dr.Sumer K Sethi !!! This book is bound to be one of the classics of PG Preparatory books if the author changes the style of the text which now appears truncated and chewed upon to be more flowing and vibrant and the Publishers could concentrate a little on the Typesetting

As one of the reviewers remarked “This book can be read at the cost and time of two movies” and to answer 100 % in State PG and about 90 % (87.5 % to me more accurate) in All India (where you are expected to answer 66 % correctly to get into the top 100 ranks) from such a small book is commendable and the author needs to be appreciated
